Officials at the company handling the sale of items from the Georgia Dome say the long-delayed fan auction is still going to happen, even as the facility is prepared for demolition and its replacement prepares for its first events.
Josh Bussmann, a sales manager for Schneider Industries, spoke briefly with InsiderAdvantage Friday. “We hope to be making an announcement soon,” he said. “We are compiling all the items for sale.” After that, Bussmann said he was pressed for time and ended the phone call.
Georgia World Congress Center officials said they were not in a position to comment on the sale of items from the Georgia Dome. “This was not a program sponsored or promoted by GWCCA,” communications director Holly Richmond said in an email.
Richmond said the Dome’s demolition, delayed from last month, is going to happen Nov. 20. “The site is being prepared for demolition in November and is on track,” she said.
By the end of last month, the removal of commercial equipment, which was sold in June, was complete, and all team equipment had been removed. Utilities were disconnected on July 17, and waste products like light bulbs and lubricants will be removed by the middle of this month. By the end of this month, the concrete in the lower seating area should be removed.
Richmond said that GWCC will be environmentally aware as it disposes of the Dome’s remains. “GWCCA is a LEED Silver facility and waste diversion is the cornerstone of our environmental efforts,” she said.
The building will be imploded at 7:30 a.m. on Nov. 20. After that, the GWCC plans to finish backfill at the site by February. That time frame, along with the fact Mercedes-Benz Stadium is slated to start hosting events within a week, leaves little obvious time for the fan auction.
