Scott Turner, executive director of the White House Opportunity and Revitalization Council, met with Savannah officials Monday to learn about the city’s wildly successful ‘opportunity zones,’ as well as to give some tips and pointers on what has been successful in similar areas around the country. Opportunity zones, which provide capital gains tax relief in specific areas, normally low income neighborhoods, were created around the country in the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. Savannah has several such zones, which have helped raise up historically disadvantaged parts of the city. Meteorite lands in Georgia
On Thursday afternoon many Georgians noticed a blaze of light flash across the sky. It wasn’t a bird or a plane – it was a meteorite plummeting to earth. And starting on Friday a very specific breed of tourists descended on the state; meteorite hunters. Armed with rare mineral magnets, the hunters searched fields and construction sites in and around West Forest, in Henry County, searching for chunks of space rock that can be sold for more than $100 a gram.
