Legendary Atlanta attorney Lin Wood surprisingly appeared on a Zoom call with Mercer University Law School Dean Cathy Cox, Georgia’s last Democratic secretary of state, to “defend his reputation” from “defamation” over his $1 million gift to fund a new law school courtroom. Wood, a supporter of former President Donald Trump and who represented him in lawsuits, was attacked by Cox in a call with law students.
Wood suddenly announced himself a few minutes into the call and proceeded to take Cox and Mercer to task over his First Amendment right to speak out.
Before Wood defended himself, however, Cox told everyone on the call that she “observed noticeable changes” when monitoring his Twitter account. She wondered if his family could “get him help” and claimed that since the summer his tweets went “from a super-charged Trump supporter to the angry Trump supporter, to the insane to the violent.” Wood forcefully but calmly rebutted her accusations. He explained his tweets, answered questions from students and said he would gladly take his name off of the courtroom if he could get his money returned.
Cox noted there is a signed “binding agreement” between the school and the donor— but “we would have to break the agreement” if a decision by the president and trustees is made. The law school dean said on the call “there has to be a discussion about this” and there might be a policy developed to take names off of buildings. Mercer President William Underwood “is not ready to make that decision,” she also said.
Wood stated that at no time during the past year had Cox expressed any concerns to him. “I’m just exercising my right to free speech,” he said. “You’re attacking me because I’m not on the right side of your political views.”
