Augusta residents are hopeful that the City Commission will find a way to preserve the city’s oldest fire station, Fire Station No. 2 located on Dyess Park. Originally built in 1890, it was the first official city firehouse built after Augusta’s fire department was established four years earlier. In 1979 it was refurbished as the community center for the newly-built Dyess Park, but hasn’t received any additional funding since 2012 and has been vacant for several years. Supporters, including local nonprofit Historic Augusta, hope the commission can find a solution to preserve the firehouse; whether that’s to offer it up to private investors to maintain or incorporate money for it in Dyess Park’s budget.
