According to a new report from the FBI, Atlanta saw a 20% increase in sextortion cases involving minors from 2022 to 2023. Sextortion is when an individual is coerced into sending sexually explicit pictures to someone else, who then blackmails them. The 196 reported incidents last year are up a whopping 700% from 2021. Sextortion falls under the FBI’s purview because many cases go across state, or even international lines, so the legislature and local authorities can only do so much. The City of Atlanta and the Georgia Democratic Party made a strong push to host the 2028 Democratic National Convention, but fell short once again when it was announced that Boston, Denver and Philadelphia are the three finalists.
