The University System Board of Regents on Tuesday approved the state’s second public medical school, to be a part of the University of Georgia in Athens.  State officials applauded the unanimous decision, pointing to the need for additional physicians and other medical personnel.  The Athens campus will join Augusta University as the only public medical schools in the state, and plans to partner with local medical systems including Northeast Georgia Health System, Piedmont Healthcare and St. Mary’s Health Care System.  And of course the Atlanta Metro just down the road has no shortage of hospital systems that could use aspiring doctors.  Students are expected to be enrolled as soon as the fall of 2026.
