In the classrooms of Twiggs County, Georgia, an extraordinary transformation in education is underway, driven by a simple yet powerful belief: no child’s future should be limited by where they live. Thanks to Georgia Tech’s Rural Computer Science Initiative, students in areas across the entire state of Georgia are exploring coding, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity — often for the very first time.

As we brainstormed this idea, my colleague, Representative Matt Dubnik, and I knew that students around Georgia deserved this sort of access and opportunity, and it is gratifying to see how rapidly and effectively this initiative has developed and expanded. The initiative connects Georgia Tech faculty and students with the latest computer knowledge and technology to rural Georgia.

Since its 2022 launch, it has grown from serving 800 to more than 4,400 students in a year and now connects with more than 46 schools across 40 rural districts in Georgia. The program offers modules like coding, cybersecurity, AI, and robotics to students and co-teaching lessons to inspire and equip rural teachers with skills for independent teaching.

A New Path for Teachers

The program has been nothing short of transformative for educators like Shiona Drummer, a computer science teacher in Twiggs County. Like other teachers in the program, Drummer initially had no background in computer science. But today, she teaches with a renewed sense of purpose and an expert grasp of the material.

For many educators, this represents more than a professional enhancement — it signifies a comprehensive transformation of their classroom roles. Teachers previously lacking experience in computer science are now adeptly guiding students through subjects such as coding, artificial intelligence, and robotics. The program promotes a sense of community and support, ensuring that teachers have access to a network of colleagues and experts as they develop these new competencies.

The initiative’s co-teaching model extends beyond mere technical training by providing a robust support network. Educators like Drummer, especially those in rural areas, now benefit from the guidance of seasoned educators and professionals from Georgia Tech.

Transforming Student Engagement

The students in these classrooms aren’t just learning — they’re discovering. For many, computer science is their first exposure to relevant and exciting fields. Lessons are designed to go beyond the theoretical, connecting students to real-world challenges that resonate with their lives and communities.

This hands-on approach has revolutionized engagement. Where traditional classes may have left students uninspired, these computer science lessons spark curiosity and creativity. In one project, students used robotics and coding to address local environmental issues, gaining not only technical knowledge but also an understanding of how they can make an impact.

Showing students that their education is a gateway to innovation and opportunity is the essence of the initiative. They’re not just learning to use technology; they’re learning to solve problems, think critically, and imagine possibilities they may have never considered before.

Building a Workforce for the Future

By introducing rural students to in-demand fields like artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and robotics, the initiative is preparing them for jobs in a rapidly evolving economy. But the vision extends even further. This program ensures that students from rural communities don’t have to leave their hometowns to find meaningful, high-paying careers. With the skills they develop, these young people can contribute to their communities while remaining an integral part of a global workforce.

In addition to filling current jobs, the program focuses on creating a pipeline of talent that will drive Georgia’s economy forward for decades. Programs like this ensure that our state remains competitive in an era defined by technological innovation.

Supporting Teachers for Sustainable Change

The lasting success of the Rural Computer Science Initiative depends on its ability to sustain momentum long after Georgia Tech steps back. That’s why teacher empowerment is a cornerstone of the program. Professional development, co-teaching, and problem-based learning ensure that local educators have the tools they need to continue inspiring students year after year.

By focusing on sustainability, the initiative plants seeds that will grow for generations. It’s not just about improving education today — it’s about transforming the trajectory of entire communities.

A Vision for Georgia

For me, the heart of this initiative has been simple: a child’s zip code should not limit their future. The Rural Computer Science Initiative is proof that innovation, opportunity, and success are not confined to urban centers. In the classrooms of rural Georgia, students and teachers are discovering their potential. They are learning that knowledge is power and that technology is a tool for change.

As I reflect on the progress of this initiative, I’m filled with optimism for the future of our state. Programs like this show us that when we invest in education, we’re investing in a brighter future for all Georgians.
