U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff, D-GA, is asking Georgia service members and military families to share their stories about privatized military housing conditions as he continues to investigate allegations of mistreatment of these families. Ossoff made the request in a public service announcement released Tuesday.
This all dates back to 2022 when Ossoff launched an investigation that uncovered the mistreatment of military families living in privatized housing on Ft. Eisenhower located southwest of Augusta. Now, Ossoff wants to hear from more Georgia military families about current conditions of their military housing.
According to Ossoff, local media reporting in recent years has found that Georgia military families have continued to raise concerns about privatized military housing conditions on installations across the state.
“I want to fight for you and hold these companies accountable if they’re letting you down,” Ossoff says in the PSA. “You make huge sacrifices in defense of our nation, and you shouldn’t have to sacrifice a safe, clean, healthy home for you and your family or the quality of customer service and tenants’ service that you deserve.”
According to the Senator, the 8-month investigation in 2022 found that “mismanagement at one of the country’s largest military housing companies has put the health and safety of military families at risk.” The report stated that “investigations found that executives and managers at Balfour Beatty Communities LLC failed to properly respond to both repairs and environmental hazards such as mold in homes on two military bases,” Fort Gordon Army Base in Georgia and Sheppard Air Force Base in Texas.
As a result of the investigation, Ossoff says the U.S. Army then conducted unit-by-unit inspections of housing on military installations, starting at Ft. Eisenhower.
In 2023, Ossoff convened a military housing oversight session to continue the work to improve housing conditions for military families in Georgia and across the nation.
