Just days after former state Rep. Dexter Sharper submitted a letter of resignation to Gov. Brian Kemp, he pleaded guilty to in federal district court to illegally receiving more than $14,000 in pandemic unemployment benefits. That makes him the second Democrat to do so this year, former state Rep. Karen Bennett pleaded guilty to a similar charge. Sharper will be sentenced in July, but prosecutors have asked he pay $10,096 in restitution and an additional $100 administrative fee (a number oddly less than what he fraudulently received). Atlanta Beltline light rail back on the menu?
Many Atlantans were dismayed when Mayor Andre Dickens seemingly tabled the idea of light rail along the Atlanta Beltline, the city’s wildly popular and successful pedestrian path. After all, light rail was a core part of the loop’s original vision, meant to connect the city all around its (eventual) 22-mile loop. But now the Atlanta City Council is pushing back, with 11 councilmembers, led by Atlanta City Councilwoman Kelsea Bond signing onto a resolution signaling support for the idea.
