Manuel’s Tavern turns 70
When Manuel’s Tavern opened in Atlanta’s Poncey-Highland neighborhood on August 6th, 1956, it was just another neighborhood bar, serving mostly Emory students. But in the 70s it became a hot spot for Democratic Party politicos. Jimmy Carter announced his run for governor of Georgia there, and it began hosting election night watch parties and other gatherings. Familiar names from Bill Clinton and Barack Obama to John Lewis have all stopped in, and former owner Manuel Maloof served as DeKalb Co. commissioner.
