Fox5/Morris/InsiderAdvantage Poll Conducted by OpinionSavvy:
Carson and Huckabee Lead Crowded GOP Field in Georgia; Isakson Has Strong Approval Rating from GOP Voters
A telephone survey conducted on the evening May 12, 2015 by OpinionSavvy shows two of the newer announced candidates for the GOP nomination for president leading a crowded field in Georgia. The poll was conducted by phone among 516 likely voters in the March 1 2016 GOP primary. It is weighted for age, race, and gender. The poll has a margin of error of 4.1%. Crosstabs at the bottom of the page.
In the GOP presidential contest in Georgia here were the results:
Carson: 20%
Huckabee: 20%
Rubio: 14%
Bush: 12%
Cruz: 8%
Walker: 7%
Paul: 6%
Fiorina: 2%
Trump: 1%
Christie: 1%
Others: 2%
Undecided: 7%
Analysis: Georgia has traditionally voted for candidates who were viewed as both fiscally and socially conservative. For example, the last InsiderAdvantage poll released before the 2008 presidential primary vote in Georgia showed Mike Huckabee defeating John McCain– and that was the result when voters went to the polls that year. Our 2012 survey showed Newt Gingrich defeating Mitt Romney, which also was the result of that primary. While the names on the ballot may be reduced when Georgia hold its primary next March 1, it is clear that likely primary voters in Georgia lean heavily toward candidates they view as both fiscal and social conservatives.
When asked about the job performance of U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson, likely GOP voters made it clear that they approve of the job Isakson is doing:
Approve of Isakson’s job performance: 71%
Disapprove of Isakson’s job performance: 18%
Undecided: 11%
Analysis: This is an extremely strong number for Isakson. Most U.S. Senators have weak approval ratings, even within their own party, this far out from reelection. That’s because they are in D.C. much of the time and don’t get the exposure in the media that governors and other major leaders receive back home on a daily basis. As a result of these numbers, it would seem virtually impossible for Isakson to lose in next year’s primary election and once he takes to the airwaves. My guess is that these numbers will only continue to improve.
As for Governor Nathan Deal, the news is good as well. His approval among Republican voters is also strong.
Approve of Deal’s job performance: 78%
Disapprove: 21%
Undecided: 1%
Analysis: Deal won his GOP nomination for reelection last year by a wide margin. He remains highly popular with Republicans in Georgia after a strong legislative session. It will be interesting to see if he lines up with one of the presidential hopefuls, as his endorsement could give a big boost to a candidate in Georgia’s March 1 primary.
