A series of unofficial plans released over the weekend by a local community group give a glimpse into what the area surrounding Turner Field may look like once the Braves move to their new digs in Cobb County.
The concept images include the Ted re-purposed into a football stadium for Georgia State, with tree-lined streets and light rail criss-crossing a mixed use neighborhood featuring apartments, retail, and academic buildings. The plans, while unofficial and not tied to the university itself, give a first look into what local leaders have in mind for the area. While there is still a long way to go in terms of securing funding, drawing up official and workable designs, and coming to an agreement with a neighborhood that has often been combative with regards to construction in the area, the wheels are turning for a part of the city that has been mostly left behind even as other in-town neighborhoods, like nearby Grant Park, have seen waves of new development.

In a twist of irony, the Braves left downtown in large part because of the lack of development around the ballpark, and it seems it took them leaving for their old neighborhood to finally move forward.
