Braves Team Up with Comcast
In a move that spawned a thousand jokes, the Braves announced Monday that they would be partnering with Comcast to provide internet service and other technology to the new stadium and surrounding mixed use development. Comcast will also take up office space in the office tower adjacent to the stadium.
The news is not entirely surprising considering the two already have a deal in place at the soon-to-be-destroyed Turner Field. Maybe not the best publicity though, when a organization that has been getting crushed by the media for its seemingly endless series of missteps in moving to Cobb County announces it is teaming up with the cable company that was named as 2014’s “Worst Company in America” by the Consumerist.
As anyone who has had to deal with their technical support can tell you, that award is well deserved.
Two Georgia Teams Dancing
The Georgia Bulldogs and Georgia State Panthers both received bids to the 2015 NCAA Tournament, which begins in earnest on Thursday. UGA, which was selected as an at-large team based on its strong strength of schedule and solid record, will face off against the battle tested Michigan State Spartans on Friday at 12:40 pm. Michigan State figures to be a difficult test for Georgia Head Coach Mark Fox’s squad, and a victory there would likely lead to an even stiffer one – this time against a powerhouse Virginia squad.
Georgia State secured its bid by virtue of Sunday’s 38-36, (ew) victory over Georgia Southern in the Sunbelt Conference Championship Game. That ugly game received much national attention for what happened just after the game, when Georgia State Head Coach Ron Hunter tore his achilles during the post-game celebration. Hunter’s Panthers are led by son R.J., who will have his hands full when his team faces off against the third seeded Baylor Bears, this Thursday at 1:40 pm.
UGA Women’s Hoops Coach to Retire
Andy Landers, the first and only full time women’s basketball coach in UGA history, announced his retirement Monday. Landers, who first began his coaching career at the school in 1979, had a storied career which featured five Final Fours and not a single season with a losing record. Women’s basketball might not be a ‘glamour’ sport, but Landers’ success was undeniable and his legacy at Georgia is matched by few. Enjoy retirement Andy, you’re a damn good dawg.
