Anyone who has driven up (or down) I-75 and I-575 in Cobb County over the past couple of years is aware of the major construction that has been going on. What many don’t know, however, is that the project, known formally as the ‘Northwest Corridor Express Lanes,’ is the largest road construction operation in Georgia history.
While the construction has obviously caused some traffic headaches, as road projects are wont to do, the good news for Cobb residents is that the network of new optional toll lanes designed to alleviate congestion are nearly finished – they should be done by the end of the Summer, hopefully by Labor Day.
The project features some truly massive new construction, including flyover ramps at the I-75/285 connector higher than those at Spaghetti Junction, as well as the longest land bridge in state of Georgia – over a mile long – further up towards Kennesaw. Its 29.7 total miles will feature Peach Pass express lanes, which will help cover the $834 million cost. Once debt repayment is complete, additional funds raised will go towards other state construction projects.
