The Republican and Democratic Party primary elections are May 22 and early voting around the state begins today. This is a critical election for both parties and there is a very long ballot. You can download a copy of the ballot online from the Georgia Secretary of State website and get a list of early voting polling places and times. https://www.mvp.sos.ga.gov/MVP/mvp.do
Study the candidates. Remember that along with state legislative and local government primaries in many areas of the Peach State there are also non-partisan local judicial elections on all ballots. A statewide non-partisan Court of Appeals vacancy must also be filled.
The GOP has a formidable slate of major candidates to be the party’s nominee for governor (5 candidates), Secretary of State (4 candidates) and Lieutenant Governor (3 candidates). The Democrats also have two strong primary candidates for governor: former state Reps. Stacey Abrams (an African-American attorney) and Stacey Evans (a white attorney). The Democrat candidate for Secretary of State is former Augusta-area U.S. Congressman John Barrow.
There are numerous Georgia state House and Senate primaries, with the state Democratic Party and left-wing political action committees targeting GOP candidates more than during the last cycle. And all members of the U.S. House of Representatives are on the ballot, with the Democratic National Committee especially targeting incumbent Rep. Karen Handel in the suburban Atlanta 6th Congressional District during the fall campaign.
In addition, on May 22 Georgians will vote for Attorney General, Secretary of State, Commissioners (Agriculture, Insurance, Labor), 2 Public Service Commissioners) and State School Superintendent.
