There is tremendous focus on illegal immigration and its consequences both nationally and in Georgia. Recent developments range from Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance-Bottoms refusing to take new Immigration Control & Enforcement detainees in the city jail to Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle’s pending complaint before the state’s immigration enforcement review board that Decatur is a “sanctuary city” for illegals. Almost overlooked is that Emory University last fall launched a new program to give free tuition for illegal aliens even as it charges full tuition to citizens.

Emory’s program is called “Need-Based Financial Aid Program for Undocumented Students, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA) Students.” A look at the school website’s financial aid section reveals that the program provides “all undocumented students (with or without DACA)… financial aid funds to assist them in meeting their demonstrated need.”

By the way, Emory’s tuition for the 2017-2018 academic year is $69,502 — including living expenses.

Emory President Claire Sterk has announced that “additional initiatives” to help “undocumented” immigrants are available. But not for legal immigrants. It appears from reading the website that this elite private school bans what its labels “international students” from applying to the “undocumented/DACA” program even if they attended a U.S. high school. This means that legal immigrants, who are in the country on a temporary legal visa, are not eligible to apply.

Emory University received approximately $384 million in federal funding last year. With U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions cracking down on havens (“sanctuaries”) for illegal immigrants, insiders wonder if the university will be targeted for federal retribution for circumventing federal immigration law.
