Following the closure of the Atlanta City Detention Center, many were worried that nearby jails would face difficulties in absorbing extra inmates. It turns out those concerns were well-founded, as Fulton County Jail is now overcrowded by some 500 inmates, and is considering an injunction to prevent Atlanta from sending more. More than a third of the inmates in the jail are from Atlanta, and nearly 200 are being forced to sleep on floor mattresses in the jail’s common area. Georgia approves three-year bachelor’s degree
Georgia is joining a handful of other states in trying out a new three-year bachelor’s degree program meant to get students into the job market faster. The University System of Georgia’s Board of Regents has approved the Bachelor of Applied Science, which cuts down on electives and only requires 90 credit hours instead of the traditional 120.
