It’s been a year of highs in Georgia. Record high temperatures, record number of films produced, record tourism numbers, record…. number of snakebites? According to the Georgia Poison Control Center, there have been 392 snakebites recorded in the state this year, compared to 355 at this time last year. There have also been 98 cases of individuals needed antivenom. Experts are attributing the numbers to this summer’s high temperatures, as well as the housing boom across much of the state, but whatever the reason a record number of snake bites has the state’s ship SINKING…
Report highlights maternity care struggles
Expanding access to rural healthcare has been a key priority for legislators in recent years, but there are still areas where Georgia struggles. One of those is access to maternity care, where according to a study by March of Dimes, nearly half of the state’s 159 counties are considered ‘maternity care deserts.’ That means that some 159,000 women in Georgia live more than 30 minutes from a hospital that provides labor and delivery services.
