With the expected yet surprising entry of Congressman Doug Collins (GA-R-09) into the Senate race against incumbent appointee Kelly Loeffler, all eyes turned this week to that race which pits Governor Brian Kemp’s pick for the seat against one of President Donald Trump’s favorite House members.

Outside of Collins’ announcement, there are some other moves happening this week in the madhouse of revolving chairs that is Georgia politics this year.

Longtime senator and a powerful female voice in the state Republican caucus Renee Unterman (R- 45 Buford) has been in the race for the retiring Rob Woodall’s 7th district and announced a new round of endorsements today, including that of Lieutenant Governor Geoff Duncan.

“I am honored to have the support of so many dedicated public servants from Forsyth and Gwinnett counties. From the beginning, my campaign has focused on the kitchen table issues that matter most to our community and its citizens, and I am humbled by the confidence these local officials have placed in me to fight for our shared values in Washington. From Loganville to Cumming, I am working every day to earn the support of every voter in the 7th Congressional District between now and the Republican primary on May 19.”

Besides Duncan, longtime Gwinnett County Sheriff Butch Conway, Gwinnett Commission Chair Charlotte Nash, Representative Brett Harrell (R-106 Snellville) and 13 current or former mayors lended their endorsements as well.

Collins’ move means there will now be a scramble to fill his soon-to-be open seat in the 9th District. Two members of the state legislature announced on Thursday their intention to run for the seat.

Rep. Kevin Tanner represents the, 9th District, in the state House, which includes Lumpkin County and parts of Dawson and Forsyth counties.

“My family has made North Georgia home for generations. This is my home, our values are a way of life, and I would be honored to serve our families in Congress as your trusted and effective conservative leader.  I am asking for your prayers and your support because I am ready to oust Nancy Pelosi and join President Trump in his fight to Keep America Great,” said Tanner.

Across the floor of the capitol, Tanner’s Senate colleague John Wilkinson announced his intention to run for the seat as well. Wilkinson is from Toccoa and the 50th district in the Senate.

“This is a critical time for our country, and we need an experienced, conservative voice willing to stand up for the values that residents of North Georgia hold dear”, said Wilkinson. “For the past eight years in Atlanta, I have fought to eliminate useless red tape and regulation of business, defended the sanctity of all life, and fought for our constitutional rights guaranteed by the 2nd Amendment. I look forward to continuing that fight in Washington.”
