Georgia Power and Georgia Tech on Thursday celebrated the opening of their 1.4 MW microgrid project in Tech Square in Midtown Atlanta. A microgrid is a self-contained power system located within the facility it powers, which must contain generation resources, storage systems and energy management systems. Obviously such a project requires a hi-tech host with well-trained operators, something that Georgia Tech can provide. The school will use the microgrid as a “living laboratory” in addition to being a power source, offering students and Georgia Power officials alike insight as to how small-scale energy management systems operate within the larger grid. Georgia approves three-year bachelor’s degree
Georgia is joining a handful of other states in trying out a new three-year bachelor’s degree program meant to get students into the job market faster. The University System of Georgia’s Board of Regents has approved the Bachelor of Applied Science, which cuts down on electives and only requires 90 credit hours instead of the traditional 120.
