Gov. Brian Kemp has announced that the General Assembly will meet Nov. 3, with a session that will probably last until the week of Thanksgiving, to begin a special session to redraw Georgia’s congressional, state legislative and local electoral districts. The lawmakers will be drawing and approving the district boundaries to account for population shifts over the past decade as reflected in the U.S. Census. With Republicans holding the governorship and dominating in the legislature, they will draw maps to create new and friendly Republican districts to recoup losses to Democrats in recent years. Moldova soon to be welcoming a Georgian
It is rare for a native-born Georgian to serve as an ambassador to a foreign nation, but J. Mark Burkhalter is one of that elite having been nominated by President Donald Trump and then just confirmed by the U.S. Senate to be U.S. ambassador to the Republic of Moldova. The Alpharetta native represented north Fulton County in the General Assembly for 18 years and briefly served as speaker of the House of Representatives. A successful real estate developer, Burkhalter is a University of Georgia alum with a double major in German and Slavic Languages, and Global Studies/Political Science.
