This Saturday two prominent Georgians will be honored by the Georgia Historical Society as modern-day Georgia Trustees, the highest honor the state can confer. Son of Chick-fil-A founder Truett Cathy, (also a Trustee) Dan Cathy is being recognized for his work growing the fast food chain, taking it nation-wide in his time as CEO and turning it into one of the nation’s most popular brands. Former Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin is the other inductee, the first black woman to be mayor of a major Southern city, she saw the city through a period of unmatched growth. Moldova soon to be welcoming a Georgian
It is rare for a native-born Georgian to serve as an ambassador to a foreign nation, but J. Mark Burkhalter is one of that elite having been nominated by President Donald Trump and then just confirmed by the U.S. Senate to be U.S. ambassador to the Republic of Moldova. The Alpharetta native represented north Fulton County in the General Assembly for 18 years and briefly served as speaker of the House of Representatives. A successful real estate developer, Burkhalter is a University of Georgia alum with a double major in German and Slavic Languages, and Global Studies/Political Science.
