A pair of Republican U.S. House races were most watched runoff elections of the day Tuesday, but there was more to be decided including a slate of statewide Democratic races and more Congressional battles on both sides of the aisle on a traditionally low-turnout and unpredictable election day. Here’s how it played out:
GOP Ballot:
- U.S. House District 2: Chris West will face U.S. Rep. Sanford Bishop in November after defeated Jeremy Hunt in a bruising race that drew national attention. Republicans view the redrawn 2nd District as winnable for the first time in nearly three decades. West, an attorney and officer in the Georgia Air National Guard, received the endorsements of all three other primary opponents en route to winning the runoff.
- U.S. House District 6: In a race that got nasty and personal in its final days, emergency medicine physician Rich McCormick cruised to victory over Trump-endorsed attorney Jake Evans to secure the Republican nomination. He will be a heavy favorite to win in November against Democrat Bob Christian in a Metro Atlanta district that was redrawn to lean more heavily red.
- U.S. House District 7: Mark Gonsalves easily emerged victorious over Michael Corbin in CD-7, where he will face an uphill battle against U.S. Rep. Lucy McBath in a Metro Atlanta district that swung further to the left after redistricting.
- U.S. House District 10: Trump-backed Vernon Jones fell to Mike Collins in north Georgia’s 10th District by a three to one margin. Jones, a former Democrat, had burst onto the scene ahead of the primary but Collins’ deep roots in the reliably red district proved too much for him to handle.
Democratic Ballot
- Lieutenant Governor: Charlie Bailey, who swapped into the race from an attorney general bid, defeated former Atlanta City Councilman and U.S. Rep. Kwanza Hall in this Democratic runoff. Bailey will face Republican state Sen. Burt Jones in November.
- Secretary of State: State Rep. Bee Nguyen, seen as a rising star in the state Democratic Party, dispatched Dee Dawkins-Haigler by a near-50 point margin to advance to the general election against incumbent Brad Raffensperger.
- Insurance Commissioner: Janice Laws Robinson defeated Raphael Baker to secure her party’s nomination, advancing to the November general election to face Republican incumbent John King, who won his primary outright last month.
- Labor Commissioner: Atlanta state Rep. William Boddie emerged victorious over Nicole Horn Tuesday, and will face state Sen. Bruce Thompson in the general.
- U.S. House District 1: Wade Herring defeated rival Joyce Marie Griggs in a low-turnout affair, to advance to what will likely be a hopeless challenge against U.S. Rep. Buddy Carter in the right-leaning 1st District on Georgia’s coast.
- U.S. House District 10: The only district to boast two runoffs, CD-10 saw Tabitha Johnson-Green advance over Jessica Allison Fore for the right to face the aforementioned Mike Collins in November.
