In 2018 the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office caught Darrell Oliver, an alleged serial rapist. The DA’s office took him to trial three separate times, but lost each case. Those losses prompted Augusta District Attorney Jared Williams to restructure his office and create a new Major Crimes Division, which will tackle difficult violent and sexual crimes in his district. The new SVU prosecutors last week got Oliver in court again, where he was convicted of rape and kidnapping, and received two life sentences plus 20 years. “To the gang members and people who do gun violence – we’ve got a gang too. Report highlights maternity care struggles
Expanding access to rural healthcare has been a key priority for legislators in recent years, but there are still areas where Georgia struggles. One of those is access to maternity care, where according to a study by March of Dimes, nearly half of the state’s 159 counties are considered ‘maternity care deserts.’ That means that some 159,000 women in Georgia live more than 30 minutes from a hospital that provides labor and delivery services.
