House Speaker Jon Burns, R-Newington, points out some legislation that passed the lower chamber on Crossover Day that are bills to watch down the stretch of the 2023 session.
- HB 228, sponsored by state Rep. Katie Dempsey, R-Rome, expands eligibility for tuition assistance for nursing students, an occupation which is in short supply and high demand statewide.
- State Rep. Matt Reeves’, R-Duluth, HB 383 stiffens penalties for crimes committed against healthcare workers and grants hospital security personnel arrest powers on their campuses.
- HB 364, sponsored by state Rep. Scott Holcomb, D-Atlanta, is labeled the ‘Wrongful Conviction Compensation Act.’ It seeks to simplify the compensation process for those wrongfully convicted of crimes by creating a Claims Advisory Board to review claims from the exonerated.
- HB 462 from state Rep. Mandi Ballinger, R-Canton, encourages courts to try individuals 17 and under in juvenile courts strictly. Superior courts would maintain jurisdiction when a 17 year old is accused of a gang offense, a felony, or has a pre-existing criminal record.
