Last Friday Fort Gordon, outside Augusta, was officially renamed as Fort Eisenhower, marking the ninth and final renaming of Army bases this year. In 2021 Congress created a naming commission that sought to rename military bases named after Confederate leaders. Fort Eisenhower is named after former President Dwight D. Eisenhower, a five-star general who commanded the Allied forces in World War II. And the Texas-born Eisenhower does have ties to the area – he enjoyed vacationing in Augusta during his presidency and especially in playing the city’s famed Augusta National golf course. Eisenhower’s granddaughter, Susie, was on hand for the ribbon cutting ceremony last week. “If Dwight Eisenhower were here today, he would be full of heartfelt appreciation for the focus and dedication this community has placed on serving our country and keeping it safe,” she told the audience in attendance.
