Over the past five years pickleball has become one of the fastest growing recreational sports in the country, appealing to all age groups for its low barrier of entry. The city of Macon is looking to capitalize on the craze with the Rhythm & Rally Sports and Events Center, occupying multiple floors of the former Belk department store in the Macon Mall. City officials say they hope the 32-court facility will anchor the area’s redevelopment, along with the under-construction, 10,000-plus-seat amphitheater next door. Rhythm and Rally is already set to host its first major tournament, the Candy Cane Classic, with 500 entrants from across the country. In addition to its subscription-based model, the facility will host camps and clinics to introduce more Middle Georgia residents of all ages to pickleball.
