Macon’s Washington Memorial Library celebrated its 100th birthday last November, and it is every bit as vital a part of the local community as it was in 1923. In recent years the library has doubled down on its emphasis on adult literacy, offering free services aimed at boosting literacy and graduation rates in Macon-Bibb Co. And those efforts are already bearing fruit – Bibb County Schools reported a 6.09% jump in graduation rate in 2023, and Washington Memorial’s book circulation rates have spiked as well. Library officials say they want to continue to interface directly with the community via book clubs, nutrition literacy classes, genealogy services and more.
