A heated vote in Athens with a razor-thin margin of victory took place earlier this month – but it wasn’t to elect any politician. The vote was to select the name of the Classic City’s new professional ice hockey team, which going forward will be known as the Athens Rock Lobsters. The name is a nod to the classic hit song from the B-52s, a legendary band that got its start in Athens. The Rock Lobsters had to beat out the Classic City Panic, a name idea drawn from another Athens band, Widespread Panic, which it did by only about 500 votes. The Rock Lobsters will play in the Federal Prospects Hockey League starting in October in the newly-built 5,500-seat arena that is part of the Classic Center, sporting a name that pays homage to their home city’s rich musical heritage.
