U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff was on hand for the announcement that $3 million in federal funding had been secured to finally build Live Oak Public Libraries’ long-awaited new Oglethorpe Mall Branch. Savannah officials have been trying to replace the existing Oglethorpe Mall Library for years, as it had fallen into disrepair and a faulty elevator even made it non-ADA compliant. But even after securing $5.5 million in funding from Chatham Co. and another $3 million from the state, the project remained underfunded. That’s where Ossoff stepped in, securing $3 million in a recent appropriations bill, making it the only community library to receive funding in the legislation. Planning will begin immediately, and local officials say they hope to have the new facility open in about three years.
