In 2022 state officials created the Gang Prosecution Unit in response to a rash of violent crime coming from dangerous gangs across the state. Part of the state attorney general’s office, the unit has proven effective in its first two years, securing 41 convictions and indicting 139 individuals in 13 counties in and around its operating regions of Atlanta, Albany, and Augusta. Building off that success the unit is opening a new regional office in Macon-Bibb County, headed by Ashton Jordan, a former senior district attorney in the Griffin Judicial Circuit. Nathan Shoate, a former senior criminal investigator with the Fulton Co. DA’s office, will serve as lead investigator. “Violent crimes and gang activity jeopardize the safety, well-being, and quality of life for all Georgians. No matter where they live, every resident deserves to feel secure in their community,” said Senate President Pro Tempore John. F. Kennedy, who represents a district that includes Bibb Co. in Middle Georgia.
