Stephen C. Foster State Park in Charlton County, one of the gateways to the Okefenokee Swamp, has been recognized for it’s crystal clear skies and lack of light pollution, being named a gold-tier International Dark Sky Park by the International Dark Sky Association. It is the first location in Georgia to receive the designation and the only gold-tier location in the Southeast. That makes it a premier destination for stargazing, thanks to its remote location and lack of view-blocking pollution. So if you needed another reason to visit the Okefenokee, one of Georgia’s seven natural wonders, it might be to escape metro Atlanta’s light pollution (some of the worst in the country). Just make sure to look down every once in a while, the park is also known for its huge number of alligators.
