Last week Republican Vice Presidential candidate J.D. Vance swung through Valdosta for a campaign stop. But that was only the first of what promises to be a busy end of summer and fall in South Georgia. On the other side of the ballot, Vice President Kamala Harris and running mate Tim Walz have announced a bus tour across South Georgia this week, culminating in a rally Thursday night near Savannah. The southern reaches of the state have long been a Republican stronghold, but Democrats are striving to make inroads with rural voters and cut into the margins that former President Donald Trump ran up in 2016 and 2020. Georgia is officially a battleground state – and South Georgia is turning into a key national political battlefield.
