Last summer state agriculture officials were shocked by the discovery of the invasive yellow-legged hornet near Savannah in Chatham Co. The species, native to Southeast Asia, preys on honeybees and has wrought havoc on ecosystems in Europe and the Middle East, which like our own rely on bees to pollinate plants. State officials quickly leapt into action, seeking out and destroying hives wherever they could find them. Fast forward a year and the battle rages on, with teams from the department of agriculture killing two more hives over the weekend to bring their total to 51 destroyed since last August. The fighting has even become hi-tech, with officers putting tags on hornets and following them back to their nests. If you live in the Savannah area and think you’ve seen a yellow-legged hornet you can fill out the form HERE to alert ag officials.
