52 Georgia state senators have signed onto a letter urging the U.S. Department of Agriculture to take another look at some Peach State counties that they say need more assistance in the fallout of Hurricane Helene. The feds are doling out money to farmers whose crops were wiped out by the massive storm, but 13 Georgia counties were excluded because the USDA’s model said they didn’t get enough damage. But Georgia legislators are asking them to take a second look, saying the damage was indeed severe and just not captured by the system. Atlanta traffic deaths surpass homicides
A new report from Propel ATL shows that the city of Atlanta saw more traffic-related deaths than homicides last year. In 2024 Clayton, Cobb, DeKalb, Fulton and Gwinnett counties, Atlanta’s ‘inner ring,’ saw 410 homicides, but 425 traffic fatalities. The group says that while both totals are tragic, traffic issues are easier to solve. With heavy congestion and lagging infrastructure, Atlanta officials are working to hurry up safe streets projects ahead of next year’s World Cup, but many still lag behind, and the city’s pedestrian fatalities draw the most alarm.
