Many counties across the Atlanta metro are facing issues with overcrowding at local animal shelters. That’s why DeKalb Co. officials made it a priority to build a new “pet neighborhood” at their local shelter, including 10 units that can house 120 dogs in total. Over half of the $4.1 million project is being funded by a county SPLOST, and seeks to alleviate some of the overcrowding issues. While local animal control officials say they continue to work on getting to the root of the issue – including through spay and neuter programs – the overflow units will create a safe, secure home for dogs and the staff and volunteers who work to find them homes.
