One of Georgia’s most vibrant and fascinating ecosystems is one most residents will never get to experience – because it’s about 20 miles off the Georgia coast and 65 feet underwater. Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary covers an area roughly the size of St. Simon’s Island and is teeming with life, covered in live coral reefs and inhabited by more than 200 species of fish, sea turtles, invertebrates, and even right whales. It attracts researchers from all over the world, who launch expeditions by boat and in scuba gear, but it remains nearly inaccessible to the general public. That’s where Gray’s Reef Ocean Discovery Center in downtown Savannah comes in, offering exhibits and hands-on learning about one of the state’s least-known natural wonders. VR goggles allow visitors to get right in the action, which the center’s Outreach & Social Media Coordinator Ben Prueitt calls “the most immersive way to get to the sanctuary without getting your feet wet.”
