‘Orange Crush,’ the massive HBCU spring break event held on Tybee Island, has taken place for nearly 35 years on the Georgia coast, for better or worse. But next month it will be official for the first time as Orange Crush 2025 will have a special event permit including professional security, a sanitation plan and an insurance policy. That’s a relief for residents, who pushed to cancel the event after a disastrous 2023 that included assaults, robberies, and over 110,000 visitors. The following year the county cracked down with $250,000 worth of security measures, which led to complaints that the island had turned into a “militarized zone” for the weekend. Local officials hope that by implementing stricter rules and having a singular governing body, the 2025 edition will find a nice middle ground where students can have fun but be safe and not disturb local residents.
