Tourists from all over the world are flocking to Covington, in Newton County, for one reason: vampires! Not real ones (we hope) but to visit scenes and locations from the CW show “The Vampire Diaries” which ran from 2009-2017. The show became a cult classic, particularly among teenage girls, and since it went off the air city officials have taken advantage by preserving key locations like the Newton County Courthouse clock tower or the Mystic Grill – a downtown restaurant redesigned to actually match the interior of the show. Covington has taken full advantage of its vampiric appeal, offering tours, shopping and dining to lean into the bloody teen drama that put it on the international map.
