Athens can handle a crowd just fine – see about seven fall Saturdays a year for proof. But this past weekend it drew a crowd for a very different sport; bicycle racing. The annual Twilight Criterium is an Athens tradition, and this past weekend celebrated its 45th anniversary in the city with its biggest race yet. Nearly 500 competitors took part over two days (nights) of racing, with streets closed down and bars and sidewalks packed with onlookers of all ages. In addition to the races there were food trucks, beer tents with local product, and naturally live music, as the city embraced the event and turned it into the party atmosphere that Athens is known for.
