Residents of Tybee Island on Georgia’s coast take sea turtle nesting season seriously, doing their best to protect the magnificent native creatures.  Each summer, volunteers from the Tybee Island Sea Turtle Project walk the beaches, looking for signs of nests, which they mark off with caution tape and even relocate them if they’re too close to the tide line.  Their work has paid off this year, with a record 52 nests documented, up from the previous high of 35 set in 2022!  Now in the midst of hatching season, volunteers wait overnight with many of the nests, waiting for signs of hatching, at which point they’ll help shepherd the baby turtles out to sea.  Such dedicated and experienced service from Tybee Island residents and volunteers has coastal Georgia’s sea turtle population booming.
