Firemen gather before last year’s stair climb
If you reside in the Atlanta area, mark the date of Saturday, Sept. 7th on your calendar. It is a day when one can honor the memory of New York City firefighters, police officers and emergency medical responders. They gave their lives on Sept. 11, 2001 so that others could live— in this case, by participating in the Georgia 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb at the Sovereign Building in the Buckhead section of Atlanta.
Each “climb” participant at the Sovereign Building pays tribute by climbing the equivalent of the 110 stories of the World Trade Center.
FirstService Residential, the chief sponsor and Sovereign Building property manager, says that through firefighter and community participation we can ensure that each of the 343 firefighters, 60 police officers, and 10 EMS are honored and that the world knows that we will never forget. Anyone can form a team to climb– or anyone can make a donation.
There’s onsite registration on Sept. 7 which starts at 8 am with the Sovereign Condominium Association at 3344 Peachtree Road NE in Atlanta. The climb time starts at 8:46 am— the exact moment that the first terrorist airplane hit the World Trade Center in 2001. The climb ends at noon, after which there will be a barbecue lunch.
Georgia is one of many states that participate in this national Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) program and the goal in Buckhead by Sept. 7th is to raise $25,000. The Stair Climb benefits the New York Fire Department and helps fund the programs provided by the NFFF Foundation to support the families of our nation’s fallen firefighters.
