As Georgia decisionmakers prepare to work on new legislative maps ahead of the special redistricting session that will begin tomorrow, lawmakers are holding their breath – especially in the state House. U.S. District Judge Steve Jones has called for five new majority-Black House districts around Atlanta and Macon, meaning that it is likely some incumbent legislators will be drawn into the same district and be forced to duke out a campaign. Another twist – Georgia law states that legislators must live in their district for one year prior to running, and since the next election is November 5, 2024 that deadline is passed, meaning lawmakers in newly drawn districts won’t be able to swap. The City of Atlanta and the Georgia Democratic Party made a strong push to host the 2028 Democratic National Convention, but fell short once again when it was announced that Boston, Denver and Philadelphia are the three finalists.
