ATLANTA — Democrats Michelle Nunn and Steen Miles formally entered the race for U.S. Senate Thursday, and Republican John Barge qualified to challenge Gov. Nathan Deal in the GOP primary.

Nunn, who has a significant fund-raising lead, becomes the fourth candidate to join her party’s primary for Senate. She and one-time legislator

Steen Miles joined Branko Radulovacki and Todd Robinson for a four-way contest while the Republicans have seven signed up counting Derrick Grayson who qualified Wednesday.

“I’ve spent the last 25 years working with people from all walks of life who wanted to improve their communities. I have always believed that change starts with individuals. I have learned that we can’t wait for someone else,” said Nunn.

Barge told reporters he’s optimistic in his broad name recognition as state superintendent of schools despite having a small campaign treasury.

“As I’ve traveled the state, the grassroots support is phenomenal,” he said. “Everywhere we go, there is tremendous support. I think the chances are good.”

Deal has already qualified, along with another GOP challenger, Dalton Mayor David Pennington. Democrat Jason Carter qualified Wednesday.

Other statewide races that picked up candidates include the one for secretary of state with the addition of Democrat Gerald Beckum, the mayor of Oglethorpe, and the one for attorney general with the name of former state Sen. Greg Hecht. Democrats Alisha Morgan, Rita Robinzine, Valarie Wilson and Jurita Mays qualified for state superintendent of schools, and Mike Buck entered the GOP primary for the same post. The race for Public Service Commission District 4 gained Craig Lutz.

In congressional races, Brian Reese of Savannah qualified as a Democrat and John McCallum qualified as a Republican in the 1st District.
