UGA economic impact more than $9 billion

Between the research ecosystem and leveraging extensive public service initiatives, among many other things, the University of Georgia no doubt has a huge impact on its home state.  Thanks to a report from Professor Michael Adjemian in the school’s College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, that impact has a number – $9.2 billion.

Pair of Senate bills seek to protect children online

Two bills filed in the Senate this week are designed to “mitigate harms to children online.” The legislation was filed by members of the Senate Study Committee on the Impact of Social Media and Artificial Intelligence on Children and Platform Privacy Protection as a result of meetings held during the off session.

DCA announces new funding for rural programs

This week, the Georgia Department of Community Affairs (DCA) announced two programs important to rural Georgia have received funding and are seeking grant applications for the programs. The OneGeorgia Authority is the administrator of the programs, the Rural Workforce Housing Initiative and the Rural Site Development Initiative.

Appellate court hears election law challenges

Lawyers representing the state and the Republican National Committee asked a federal appellate court Wednesday to reverse a lower court order blocking two provisions of a controversial election reform law the GOP-controlled General Assembly passed in 2021.

Energy Bills Impacted by Rising Costs

Americans are bracing for steeper heating bills this winter as the nation faces record inflation on most goods and services. Eggs hit $5 a dozen at my grocery store. Gasoline rose to record highs. Used car prices spiked 51%. Necessities like toilet paper have been in short supply. Even the $1 menu disappeared from fast food restaurants.

Georgia’s Challenge: Police Recruitment and Retention

As 2022 draws to a close, many Georgia police departments are experiencing shortages of officers and departments and are competing with one another to recruit new ones to fill vacant positions. Meanwhile the pool of new applicants is shrinking as departments are struggling to retain tenured officers who are increasingly retiring and moving to the private sector for better salary and benefits.

Atlanta snubbed for ’28 DNC Convention

The City of Atlanta and the Georgia Democratic Party made a strong push to host the 2028 Democratic National Convention, but fell short once again when it was announced that Boston, Denver and Philadelphia are the three finalists.  Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens blasted the decision, accusing the DNC of “abandoning Atlanta, abandoning the South, and once again abandoning Black voters.”  The snub has Georgia Dems SINKING…
