Gov. Brian Kemp signed a much-anticipated bill Monday that will lower the tax burden on Georgians, as well as several other bills lowering taxes and supporting economic growth.
Kemp signs consumer protection bill
Gov. Brian Kemp signed legislation into law last week that officials say will make it easier for Georgians to recover unclaimed funds held by the state. Senate Bill 403 was sponsored by Sen. Kay Kirkpatrick, R–Marietta, and sponsored in the House by Rep. Matt Reeves, R–Duluth.
UGA study shows 651,000 ports-related jobs in Georgia
A new study from the University of Georgia Terry College of Business has shown major impact from Georgia ports. More than 650,000 jobs in the state are now sustained by the state’s ports, comprising some 12 percent of total state employment. That number is up more than 40,000 over Fiscal Year 2023, the year of the previous study.
AG Carr warns of synthetic opioids flooding gas stations
Attorney General Chris Carr says Georgians should be aware of the dangers of products containing 7-OH, an opioid-like substance that is currently flooding gas stations, vape shops, and convenience stores. According to the FDA, concentrated forms of 7-OH are 13 times more potent than morphine and may lead to seizures, substance abuse disorder, withdrawal, overdose, and even death.
Dickens re-elected as Atlanta Regional Commission chair
In a move not unexpected but significant for its unprecedented nature, the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) Board re-elected Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens as chair of its board of directors. The new two-year term will start in January.
Crowded field in special election for House seat
Five Republicans and one Democrat have qualified to run in the Dec. 9 special election for the District 23 State House seat left vacant with the passing of Rep. Mandi Ballenger, who died after a long battle with cancer. The candidate elected to fill this seat, which covers Canton and unincorporated parts of Cherokee County, will fill out the remainder of Ballinger’s term.
Federal pardons; McAfee poised to drop charges
Earlier this week President Donald Trump granted pardons for 77 individuals tied to an alleged “conspiracy” to overturn the 2020 presidential election — including his Georgia allies charged by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis.
