As is often typical of Sine Die, the final day of each year’s legislative session, things got off to a slow start. With major legislation still hanging up in the air, from elections law to data centers to the budget itself, lawmakers didn’t seem to feel too much of a sense of urgency even as debates drew on in the late afternoon. But as is also typical, a slow start tends to lead to a furious finish.
Plenty on the table for Sine Die
The last day of the legislative session is upon us and there is plenty left to do. Or not to do. It’s Gov. Brian Kemp’s last Sine Die and he has remained mostly mum about his anticipated signing or veto of a number of bills.
Republicans support Democrat Gwinnett sheriff upholding illegal alien law enforcement
Republican members of the Georgia House of Representatives claimed late last week that Democrats are undermining the state’s immigration law. The Republicans claim their Democratic cohorts are “attacking Gwinnett County’s Democratic sheriff for enforcing a state statute that requires local law enforcement to inform ICE when they’ve detained someone in the country illegally.”

New bipartisan legislation, sponsored by U.S. Rep. Brian Jack, R-GA, looks to give a boost to professional boxers, with more career opportunities, better pay and greater safety precautions. The legislation is endorsed by the Association of Boxing Commissions, with a special celebrity endorsement by Lonnie Ali, wife of the late boxing legend and co-founder of The Muhammad Ali Center.
Georgia Ports container trade up in FY 2025
Fiscal Year 2025 was the second busiest year on record for Georgia’s Port of Savannah, and the rate of growth shows continuing strength in the state’s logistics trajectory. Officials said the Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) moved 5.7 million twenty-foot equivalent container units in fiscal year 2025 – an increase of 8.6 percent or 450,000 TEUs compared to the previous fiscal year.
